UltimateBet's new tournament schedule

UltimateBet was my first site. I have been playing tournaments there for almost four years. I played there before the software change drove away a ton of business and have stayed there while the customer support and management have, at times, seemed to have been trying to get rid of the rest.

UltimateBet recently decided to let Poker Pro Annie Duke revise the tournament schedule for the site. One of the most attractive features of the site, and often cited as the attractive feature of the site, is the tournament structure. I will give credit to UB for not messing with the structure. What I can't understand is how the tournaments which had been attracting a steady increase in players on a nightly basis can just be moved. If you want to add new ones fine, but keep the ones that were drawing well. It appears that the lower buy-in bounty tournaments have been elminated, moved to a different time, or will be offered on a less than nightly basis. It makes no sense. When I first started at UB almost 4 years ago, there wer always between 400-700 players in a nightly $5 tournament without a guarantee that ran around 9:00 pm EST. During a previous tournament schedule change, this tourney was moved to an earlier time. After the software "update", these tournaments were lucky to get 200 entrants.
Before the most recent update, there as a $5.50 tournament which started around the same time as a $6.50 bounty tournament. There were always 300-400 more players in the bounty tournament.
I will have more on this later as I try to find tournaments at my level on a place I have long considered to be my home site and I have always continued to play there in spite of the pleading of many friends who play online. Now I'm beginning to think that they may have been right all along. Peace.

Friends of the blog storm the final tables!

Your humble author cashed for the first time in what seems like a decade yesterday, but the big story was the friends of the blog slicing through tourneys all across the internet last night/early this morning.

MATHCLUBNZ had a couple of final tables on Absolute Poker. The first was in the $9K Guaranteed SuperStack where he won $1080.00 for finishing 3rd out of 83. The second was in $6500 Guaranteed where beating out 260 other players for a 3rd place was worth $721.50.

Finally, playing under his screenname of jakehekejnr, MathClub made the final table in PokerStars Tournament 86176132. Once again he finished 3rd, this time out of 396, and won $1318.68.

iLLNuGWichee final tabled the PokerStars $109 NLHE [$25,000 guaranteed!] winning $7815.00 for finishing 2nd out of 521.

Congrats to final table resident and good dude Louiemdj and Mrs. Louie on the birth of their baby girl this week. Momma and baby are healthy which is great.

Final Tables for Wein

Poker fiend and pocketfives.com star Wein made two final tables last night (04-25-2008). First off, he made the final table of the $25K guarantee $109 NLHE MTT on PokerStars. For his fine effort, Wein was rewarded $1165.00 for finishing 8th out of 466 players.

On FulltiltPoker under his screenname ChasingIdiot, he finished 7th of 399 in the $150 $65K guarantee MTT for a cash of $2,112. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Congrats Wein! Fantastic effort in a couple of tough tournaments.

Wein has a really good blog that you can read here: Wein's Blog

The Power of the Blog

A UC-Berkeley graduate student who was in Egypt to monitor anti-government protests was able to use the remote posting function of his blog to alert his family and friends of his arrest with a one word post. His blog allowed them to quickly obtain him with a lawyer who was able to secrue his release.

It's a great example of how blogs have become a part of the way we communicate and receive news, plus it's an interesting story.

Pacman Jones

PacMan Jones
I'm sure that many won't be surprised to find that I am a Pacman Jones fan. He was such a big part of the Mountaineer's success and didn't have the major off-field issues while at WVU. So also being a Dallas Cowboys fan made me pay attention when the matter of a possible trade between Tennessee and Dallas first came up. Mostly I hope that Pacman is able to straighten up his life. If it goes through, ESPN is reporting that the trade has not yet been finalized, this trade has the potential for being huge for the Cowboys. Pacman's on the field ability is impressive and he would really solidify the defensive back position and would be a threat as a kick returner. If acquired, the Cowboys could then use the extra first round pick they have this year from the trade with Cleveland during last year's draft which the Browns used to select Brady Quinn, to add depth to the offense at the skill positions or for help on either line. I have to say I hope that the trade goes through.

Happy Birthday to Chipper Jones

Braves Chipper Jones
Today is the 36th birthday of Atlanta Braves Third Baseman Chipper Jones. The future Hall of Famer started his night off with a single in the bottom of the first in Atlanta's game vs the Florida Marlins and hit his seventh home run of the season to center in the second inning. The Braves are currently batting in the bottom of the third inning and have the lead 6-2. Edit: Chipper finished the game 3-3 with one walk as the Braves beat the Marlins 7-4.
Chipper's had a fantastic start and hopefully he will have a healthy season this year.

Brink's backs the truck up to Wretchy's house

Brink's
Wretchy es en fuego.
He showed yet again last night why I predict that he will be wearing an expensive bracelet courtesy of Harrah's after the World Series of Poker, as he steamrolled the field and made the final table in the PokerStars $109+R NL Hold'em. While he never got his A game going heads up, the reward for finishing 2nd out of 270 entrants was a nice piece of consolation. He will have to let the cash prize of $20107.50 and several hot co-eds lift his spirits for not taking down the title. I think he'll be ok.

Obviously, the rail was incomplete last night or victory would have been in the bag.

Very well done sir. It's starting to smell a little like a triple crown in Oregon.

Congrats to John Smoltz

4 22 08 Smoltz gets Strikeout 3000
Smoltzie surpassed the 3,000 career strikeout milestone in tonight's game against the Washington Nationals. He struck out Felipe Lopez in the top of the third for number 3,000. John struck out ten in seven strong innings of work. He only gave up one run but left with the Braves trailing 1-0. Hopefully the Braves will rally to win this game.

Wretchy rolls to another big Final Table!

After taking some rough beats that kept him from final tabling the $33r (out in 10th) and after cashing in the FullTilt $1k buy-in, Wretchy made the final table in the $109 (1r & 1a)$13,500 Guarantee at FullTiltPoker. Another horrible river card knocked Wretchy out in 3rd place (of 147).
He turned his $300 investment into $5031.00!

Another great job by the Wretched one!

Milestone on the horizon for Smoltz

John Smoltz is scheduled to start tomorrow night for the Atlanta Braves when they host the Washington Nationals. Is should be a historic night for the Braves righthander. Smoltz, already the only player in baseball history to win 200 or more games and have 150 or more saves, is only four strikeouts away from 3,000 for his career. He will be only the 16th pitcher in major league history to accomplish this feat.
Braves Smoltz Baseball
While Smoltz has been battling a sore shoulder this year, he has gotten off to a fantastic start. He is 3-0 in three starts, with 21 strikeouts in only 16 innings pitched. His era is 0.56. Good luck John and Go Braves!

Another Final Table for Wretchy

In a tournament which only finished moments ago, Wretchy again displayed the ability that will make him a player to be reckoned with for years to come. He finished 2nd in the $55+r Pot Limit Omaha MTT on Pokerstars. Wretchy beat out 196 other entrants to get headsup and fought well against his opponent, but his wrap around straight draw didn't hit and he lost the heads-up battle. Still, a great showing and a prize of $7,122.26 for the Wretched One.

That's Wretchy on the right btw.

Congrats to Danica Patrick for getting a big weight off her shoulders by winning the IRL race in Japan. She seems pretty nice and has taken an awful lot of crap just because she's a lady. Now she won't have to listen to a lot of the old questions over and over again. Helio Castroneves finished second in the race.

Another Huge night for Chipper and the Braves!

For the second consecutive night Chipper Jones hit 2 home runs to lead the Braves to victory as the Braves beat the Dodgers 6-1 Friday Night. Chipper hit a three-run homer off Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe in the fifth inning and added a solo shot off of Chan Ho Park in the seventh. He ended the evening 3 for 5 and raised his average to a National League best .455 and has a National League best 18 RBIs too.

80327092MZ008_Los_Angeles_D

Jeff Francoeur accounted for the Braves' other run with an RBI single in the 2nd inning. Great to see the Braves' bats come to life and always great to have Chipper pounding the ball to all fields.

Friday's USAToday reported that Chipper is leading the Majors in hitting since the start of the 2006 season for all players with 700 or more at bats. Since then, Chipper is hitting .336 overall; .356 with 43 home runs and 145 RBI hitting left-handed and .294 with 14 homers and 54 RBI batting right-handed.

Mathclub makes it look sooooo easy!

Mathclub, under his pokerstars alias jakehekejnr, got it down to heads-up action in the $30k guarantee PokerStars $109 NLHE MTT last night. For making the final table and finishing second he scored $5300.10. Mathclub beat out 349 others in the tourney and once again showed that he is a monster player and a final table machine.
He also bubbled the $33 $5K NLHE MTT, finishing 10th of 605 for $199.00.

Big night for Chipper, Smoltz, and the Braves

Braves Marlins Baseball
Following a closed door meeting before tonight's game, Chipper Jones went 4-for-4 with a double and two homers, and John Smoltz recorded 10 strikeouts in five dominating innings, to lead the Atlanta Braves to a much needed 8-0 victory over the Florida Marlins at Dolphin Stadium Thursday Night. Chipper, Mark Texiera and Brian McCann hit back to back to back homers in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach. It was the first time the Braves hit three consecutive home runs since May, 2003, when Rafael Furcal, Mark DeRosa and Gary Sheffield performed the feat.
Chipper is now leading the National League in hitting with a .443 average. This was the 37th multi-homer game in his career.
Braves Marlins Baseball
In improving his record to 3-0 this year, Smoltzie lowered his ERA to a miniscule 0.56. This start has been in spite him having to battle tightness in his shoulder. John is now 4 strikeouts away from 3,000 in his career. ESPN reported that Smoltz was the first pitcher since 1900 (that is not a typo) to pitch exactly five shutout innings with ten strikeouts in a win.

Nuggy wins yet again! No it's not a repost.

iLLNuGWichee won the $12 Bodog $4K Guaranteed (rebuy) on 04-12-2008. For beating 143 other players Nuggy won $1411.20. Another great job. I'm running out of things to say about the daily tournaments he wins.

hoosiers

So, how about that Trevor Immelman winning the Masters? What a great job of hanging in there down the stretch. He saved us from a bunch of talk about the Grand Slam which was annoying at this point in the year in my opinion.

Congrats Nuggy and Congrats Trevor.

Big Night for Jeff Francoeur

Jeff Francoeur hit two home runs and drove in a career high seven runs on three hits to lead the Braves to a 10-2 win in Washington tonight over the Nationals.

Frenchy

John Smoltz won his second outing of the year and gave up a single run in six innings of work. He struck out five and is only 14 away from 3,000 strikeouts. His win was the 209th of his career. Great to see John get off to a good, healthy start. Also great to see the Braves' bats come to life.

Nuggy wins another one!

iLLNuGWichee won the UltimateBet $9K Guaranteed on 04-11-2008, cashing for $2565.00 and beating out 75 other players. Great job by the Indianapolis Colts number one fan.

AA is supposed to be a good hand, right?

Was frustrated last night to get knocked out of the $7 bodog mtt 7 away from the money when I got my AA in pre-flop vs AKs. Of course, the flop gave my opponent a flush and I was gone out of the money instead of having a decent stack to make a run at the final table.

Of course tonight finds me w AA and two callers to my raise pre-flop. Here, see for yourself:

Stud MTT Final Table at UltimateBet

It was a great weekend at the tables. Even though it was a small field, I was happy to make the final table in the $5.50 Stud MTT at UltimateBet. After making a final table yesterday, I was really excited to make another run deep into a tourney today. It's been a really long time since that has happened for me.

$5 50 Stud MTT 4 6 08 finish 7th won $14 40cents

I made it to the final three tables in a no limit hold em bounty tourney at UB tonight too. I didn't cash for much and only got one and a half bounty, the half bounty resulting from a hand where my AA and another guys AA knocked out a guy with KK who then proceeded to whine about losing the hand, but it was nice to have another solid tourney today to go with the final table.

John Smoltz pitched five scoreless innings today against the Mets and picked up the win for the Braves. Great to see and I hope he is able to stay healthy this year. He's a great pitcher.
Mets Braves Baseball

Good luck at the tables.

RIP Charlton Heston

Charlton Heston was a great actor and a man committed to his beliefs. I was sorry to hear about his death this morning. He had some great movies which I really enjoyed, Touch of Evil, Ten Commandments and The Planet of the Apes. He also did a great dvd tour of the Holy Land with Biblical excerpts which was really good. He lived a great life. RIP Sir

iLLNuGWichee is a final table machine

On Friday, April 4, 2008, iLLNuGWichee had a day at the tables that few dare dream about. He made 5 final tables at 4 different sites.

He finished 2nd of 62 in a Bodog 10K guarantee for $2000.
He finished 2nd of 486 in the $109 buy in $25,000 guarantee at PokerStars for $7290.
He finished 5th of 113 in the $20k guarantee at UltimateBet for $1400.
He finished 3rd of 188 in a Bodog 10K guarantee for $1190.
Finally, he finished 5th of 245 in the $22k guarantee rebuy at FullTiltPoker for $1644.90.

A fantastic effort by a great guy. Very well done sir.

Final Table at PokerStars

I haven't been able to play much the past week and the two tourneys that I did get to play saw my KK chased down by two outers on UB. I had a few hours to play Saturday and decided to try out PokerStars since I could play longer if I went deep. Well an A6 suited thought it wise to call me twice with nothing and hit an ace on the turn to crack my aces in the hold em tourney I entered so I wasn't feeling terribly optimistic. But I joined a PL Omaha tourney after busting out of the hold em tourney. I like playing PL Omaha Hi Lo but haven't played many PL Omaha Hi tourneys and have had little success. But I got off to a good start in this tourney and, after what seemed like a day and a half when we got down to ten players, I was able to make the final table. It was my first final table at PokerStars in a long time. I was able to finish 5th after starting the final table in 6th place.

One hand helped me when the big blind decided to defend and only served to double me up when the big blind's draw missed after the flop. I personally try to avoid recklessly doubling up the short stacks late in a tourney. The chips I might win never seem to be worth the risk of throwing away chips to the ss.

I was too aggressive with my last hand and pot committed myself with a pair of jacks and a suited ace. Of course someone behind me had aces so I was done. It was great to get to the final table but I wish that pocketfives.com hadn't been down. I was only able to talk to a couple of friends via AIM while the tourney was going on. I really like talking to people while playing. I guess I shouldn't but it seems like ti actually helps me play better. It's also nice to let people know that I play a little too.

$5 PL Omaha MTT 4 4 08 finished 5th won $73 03 cents

Good Luck at the tables everyone. I'll see ya soon.
